Wendy Kettleborough has been an advocate for early childhood and its workforce for 40 years. Working with parents and professionals, she has undertaken a longitudinal study into the awareness and impact of schemas on parents, children and practitioners. She coined the phrase 'conceptual engineer 'and is a successful consultant, trainer and speaker. Her chapter in the recent publication 'Working with Parents in Early Childhood Today' focuses on the practical application of key concepts that professionals and parents have described as 'transformational' and 'life changing'. Her research into Schemas and her 6 books on “Children and Schemas” have informed her work with children, parents, and practitioners. Wendy’s books are used in “Knowledge to Nurture” sessions by the Manor and Castle Development Trust to promote reflective thinking about the importance of play and authentic interaction. Wendy has spoken at Childcare Expo and universities and presented at the Nursery World Show in 2024.
In this session, Wendy will share invaluable insights on supporting children’s development through schematic play and conceptual learning. She'll explain how she first discovered the power of schematic play during her dissertation research at the pioneering Pen Green Children’s Centre. Observing patterns in children’s repeated actions opened her eyes to the incredible learning taking place. This session will give early year leads a sound knowledge of schemas and schematic play and will give practitioners confidence in being able to spot schemas in order to properly scaffold children’s explorations.
