Spatial Reasoning Pathway – four-day programme
Children need to develop their spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics and research highlights that when these skills are explicitly taught and understood by practitioners, then children’s maths attainment increases.
This practical four-day programme will look at all aspects of spatial reasoning. Participants will look at:
- Thursday 25th September Day 1:Classification and pattern
- Tuesday 9th December Day 2:Comparison within spatial reasoning
- Tuesday 27th January Day 3: Measure
- Monday 6th March Day 4: Shape and Space
The programme also focuses on the importance of the learning environment, maths in stories and small worlds and the role of gesture. Participants will also consider recent research and guidance showing the link between spatial reasoning skills and maths achievement. They will explore what high quality Early Years maths looks like and develop an understanding of assessment. Throughout the programme participants will be asked to complete in-class activities and a short action research project.
The course is open to any Early Years practitioner or Maths Lead. Currently there is only one place per academy but please email Delyth Linacre with any additional names if you would like more than one person to attend - There may be opportunity.
If you sign up, you need to be committed to attending all four days (Please note that booking forms will not be required for the remaining three sessions. A reminder will be sent to all participants registered for Day 1.)
(Booking form closes – 13:00hrs on 5thSeptember 2025)
